Mural and Ecology Walk Update

Progress Update from Mural and Ecology Walk Committee

We are now getting close to the final design for the above project.

The project consists of 2 main elements the murals and the walk

MURALS

We have defined the scope of the murals and sent the request to 3 mural artists for a sample of their ideas and a suggested mural for the 2 walls - one along the IGA supermarket and the other along Pandesal wall. We have received one submission and the other 2 are due next week which is exciting.

We will then meet to choose our preferred artist with a view to engaging them to start work early next year.

WALK

Objective of ecology walk
1. To get people moving
2. To educate, learn cool stuff
3. To explore, discover and wonder
4. To connect with our local fauna and flora
5. Enhance observational skills
6. Link community spaces - Community hub , Mural (IGA and Pandesal bakery walls walkway, rail trail, rec reserve,
community garden and fire wise garden.

The walk is aimed at children -  Kids find the hidden animals around town on 24 bollards with images of the animal mounted on the disc. (see example below) The circular markers are numbered with an image of an animal  with a question and a QR code. Answers, sound and blurb of animal will be on Meeniyan website.

There will be large information boards to explain the walk with maps etc and paper brochure holders at 3 locations around the walk - one at the community hub, one at the rail trail, and one at the bush walk at the Rec reserve.

Sally Gorman has provided all the animal images and questions in a fantastic contribution to the project and more generally in providing education on the ecology of the area.

We have engaged graphic design students to design the 3 information signs and arrange the content. That work is very close to completion and we are now going out for pricing. The circular signs have been refined and are also getting close. We also engaged a focus group of primary, secondary teachers and support workers to make sure our designs and images were appropriate for the target audience.

So all in all an exciting phase, out getting quotes to appoint artists and suppliers! A big thank you to all donors and organisations that have contributed and continue to contribute to make the project possible. Significant funds have been raised but we will likely still need  more support once we receive the quotes.
